Welcome to Milk Matters Lactation
My name is Amy Black and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). My goal is to assist families in their own homes with breastfeeding education, assistance and continuing needs. Breastfeeding problem solving, weight checks, multiples, premature to full term infants, returning to work, low supply, sore nipples, pumping, maternal mental health and more.
TESTIMONIALS
If there is anyone you need on your postpartum recovery team, Amy is essential. During the first six weeks of my son's life, she guided me through the basics of breastfeeding and the unique challenges of his tongue tie. At each home visit, she offered a level of hands-on guidance that not only put my anxieties at ease, but lent me some much-appreciated confidence as a first-time mother. Her passion for her patients is evident, as she not only followed up on my son's progress, but sent resources and information specific to our needs. She also helped me and my husband to devise a feeding plan that worked best for our family and our schedule. We still use much of that plan and her teachings to this day. Thanks to her, we are undoubtedly flourishing. Thank you, Amy!

Amy has been an absolute blessing to our family. From the moment I reached out to her, she responded immediately and made herself available to come to our home to help me learn how to breastfeed my baby. As a first-time mom, I was feeling overwhelmed, but Amy brought a calming presence and guided me through every step with patience and compassion.
She worked closely with me to help with latching and showed me multiple breastfeeding positions until we found what worked best for me and my baby. Beyond just lactation support, Amy took the time to answer all of our questions—not only mine, but my husband’s too. She even helped us learn how to wrap and wear our baby.
What truly sets Amy apart is her continued support. She has always been incredibly responsive to my texts, even when my questions weren’t directly related to breastfeeding. Whether I was concerned about my newborn’s breathing or general behavior, Amy was there to provide reassurance and guidance. She also made a point to check in on me emotionally and made sure I was coping well with the transition to motherhood, which meant so much.
We are so grateful for Amy’s support and highly recommend her to any new parent looking for expert, compassionate care.

Amy is extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and relatable! As a first-time mom, I knew I wanted to consult an IBCLC because I had no clue what I was doing. I’m so happy I reached Amy as she provided easy-to-follow directions and gave me and my husband helpful pointers on how to handle a gassy baby. I’m so grateful for Amy and plan to use her services for all my future children!

Amy has been an absolute pleasure to work with and I cannot say enough good things about our experience. After just one visit, I went from being unable to breastfeed at all to exclusive breastfeeding and Amy is incredibly responsive for any questions I have along the way. I’m so thankful to have her as a resource and am so grateful that she was able to help me on an otherwise frustrating breastfeeding journey. I’d absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for help, guidance, or just a resource and listening ear.

Amy was wonderful to work with and came highly recommended by our neighbors. We are so glad we got the opportunity to work with her and she was able to see us so soon to address our concerns with lactation and my daughter's difficulty gaining weight. She is easy to talk to and very knowledgeable. Amy put us at ease and the convenience of having her visit our home was the best part knowing we did not have to leave the house again for another appointment with a newborn baby! She addressed all of our questions and spent unrushed time with us to make sure we felt comfortable with breastfeeding and gave us a plan moving forward. If you're looking for high quality lactation services, Amy is the best!

Amy was amazing! She has amazing energy and goes above and beyond to support your lactation needs. It's evident that she is knowledgable in the field, and she makes the information digestible and easy to implement. She also went beyond lactation and discussed postpartum "baby blues" and ways to maintain self-care during the postpartum journey. Thank you so much Amy!

"The transition to being a mother is a tough one and while breastfeeding can be incredibly rewarding, it can also be very difficult. Breastfeeding was particularly challenging for me because our baby came six weeks early. And everyone seems to have an opinion about how and what you should feed your baby and that brings additional pressure. Amy immediately put me at ease, worked with me to identify my goals for breastfeeding and how to best achieve them. Best of all, there was no judgment, just support, expertise, and encouragement. Amy is a talented professional who not only helped me with breastfeeding but who also helped me enjoy the experience of being a mother. She has my highest recommendation."

Amy was wonderful. We left the hospital feeling a bit confused and overwhelmed with next steps. I needed more guidance and a schedule and Amy helped with both. Amy is very down to earth and supportive. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for support. (And in fact, I already recommended her to a friend!)

I feel very fortunate to have found Amy in those first few days postpartum. She was able to come to my home within just a few days of reaching out, which gave me such peace of mind. Her communication is excellent and scheduling is seamless. As a first-time mom, I had many questions, and Amy addressed every one of them with patience and compassion. She gave me and my husband confidence when we needed it most, and her warm, personable nature made the entire experience so comfortable. Amy went above and beyond in her care, and I truly can’t recommend her services highly enough.

I put off meeting with a lactation consultant till my baby was 3 months because I was just trying to get my feet under me. I was worried it might be “too late” to work through some of the issues we were having with breastfeeding, but Amy was able to help us through all of our struggles with no problem. She helped me to feel really good about myself as a mom and was so sweet with my baby. I would gladly recommend her any day!

Amy was absolutely wonderful during her visit. I moved to Montclair last year, having previously lived in Alexandria, where I had my first child and worked with an excellent lactation consultant. After relocating, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to find the same level of support—especially living a bit farther out. To my surprise, two different people referred me to Amy Black on the same day! At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the moment Amy arrived, she was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. Although I had breastfed my first child, I needed a few reminders and quick tips—especially since every baby brings their own unique challenges. Amy provided exactly the support I needed, and I truly appreciated her help. She’s been a wonderful resource.

I first met Amy as a new NICU nurse inpatient, and I am so grateful I did. She was a strong advocate for her NICU moms, and you can just tell how much these moms adored and appreciated her support. She is so down to earth and made everyone - included us Type A nurses! - feel heard. It was so bittersweet when she said she was leaving inpatient, but I was so thrilled that I now have the opportunity to be one of her patients. Amy is just so real - she gives such honest and raw advice that is realistic and attainable. To know her is a privilege, and if you find yourself needing anything lactation, Amy is your girl!

"We are brand new, first-time parents so our stress/anxiety level is a little high. We were a last minute apporintment and Amy arranged her personal needs (kids' school pickup) to stay late with us. She stayed with my wife well over two hours! She solved my wife's breastfeeding issues and baby had her first full meal! Amy is terrific and we will always be grateful for her assistance in our time of need."

Amy is an incredible, kind and compassionate IBCLC who made me feel seen, heard and completely comfortable from the start. We were struggling with latch and supply issues and Amy immediately gave us constructive, balanced and helpful advice and reassured us that our baby was growing well and that I was doing my best. She reiterated that both baby and I were her patients, and that my physical and emotional well being was equally important to her as baby's, and was so kind, which was a refreshing difference from some other lactation consultants I'd seen. Her cheerful warmth and positivity are infectious and my entire family loved her. We are truly so grateful to have met her, and wholeheartedly recommend her services.

Amy is a life saver. After seeing 3 different lactation consultants in the hospital, she was recommended to me as the next step for continuing to work on our latch issue outpatient. The ease of setting up an appointment with her, in the privacy of your own home, and the fact she accepts insurance is only the tip of the iceberg of what makes her services so great. She is comprehensive and thorough in her evaluation and while others are quick to recommend surgical intervention, she focuses on non invasive measures first. She is warm, empathetic and encouraging. She is also extremely available for support outside of appointments. I cannot say enough positive things about Amy and the hope she provides. I am happy to say that after 2 appointments with her, my little one and I are on our way to having a successful breastfeeding relationship! This would not have happened without Amy.

Amy was absolutely phenomenal! Although this was my second baby, it was my first time breastfeeding and she was so helpful in helping me establish a good latch, different positions to reduce pain and discomfort, and create a schedule for myself/baby that was realistic for our family. She understood my concerns and hesitations and validated how I was feeling regarding exclusively breastfeeding but she provided me the confidence and support I needed. I am so grateful for her!!

Amy is truly a lifesaver- I cannot recommend her enough! She has helped me with both of my baby girls. I am especially grateful for her help as I navigated low supply and colic with my first. She does so much more than just help with breastfeeding- she sees the big picture and supports the mom just as much as the baby. She gave me the confidence I needed and her support was invaluable as a new mom.

I cannot recommend Amy enough. Breast-feeding was a source of great anxiety for me and my newborn who was freshly out of the NICU. She was warm and incredibly comfortable in our home. She listened to me and my concerns, my wants, and what I didn’t want. I have tremendous respect for her because she honorably advised me and my baby based on our needs and not on the desire to keep business. I appreciate how she followed up with me for the next few weeks after the visit, even though she didn’t have to. She is remarkable 10 out of 10!

As a first time mom I was very overwhelmed with what exactly I needed to ensure my baby was fed and gaining weight. I reached out to Amy after struggling for 5 weeks and Amy provided me with so much reassurance and guidance. She provided me with so much comfort not only with lactation but motherhood overall. She helped me with my breast pain and provided me with tips on how I could increase my supply. I will continue to be reaching out to Amy throughout my bf journey!

Amy is a hero. She has been with us as our IBCLC for both of our kids and saved my breastfeeding journey. She’s become a part of our family! We’ve stayed in touch even after I’ve completed breastfeeding and she is always there, literally anytime of the day or night for questions, advice, and reassurance. She has been one of my biggest cheerleaders and helped guide me in advocating for my children. 10/10 recommend Amy Black with Milk Matters Lactation

Amy was so easy and flexible to work with, she’s extremely knowledgeable but also made me feel so comfortable. She doesn’t only look after the baby’s well-being, but also mom’s which I really appreciated. My sweet baby girl was having trouble latching and Amy’s tips/tricks have helped so much and she’s doing great. I highly recommend Amy for any lactation inquiries.

Amy has been a phenomenal resource through my son’s struggle with breast feeding. After being let down by my previous lactation consultant, Amy came through and spent the time necessary to troubleshoot my son’s breast feeding issues. She taught my husband and I so much and gave us some confidence we desperately needed. Amy checked in on us throughout the following weeks to make sure our plan of care was still on track. You can tell she truly cares about her profession and her patients. Would highly recommend her to any mom!
